Feel history.
See future.
Welcome to the van Gendthallen: five monumental factory halls from the late 19th century in the East of Amsterdam, which have been spared from demolition and are now being prepared for a sustainable future.
The halls were designed in 1898 by the renowned Amsterdam architect Dolf van Gendt and were built on behalf of the Royal Dutch Factory of Tools and Railway Equipment.
We were more than delighted to create a new visual identity for them that reflects the heritage of the area and the aspirations of the Van Gendt Hallen.
The Van Gendt Hallen identity revolves around the adaptable H-shaped logo. It’s more than just a symbol – it’s a visual metaphor for the five distinct halls, each with its unique character and purpose. This flexibility allows the logo to morph and scale across a variety of media, whether it’s a crisp icon on a website or a bold emblem on a banner. By anchoring the brand in this modular H-shape, we’ve ensured that the identity remains cohesive and recognizable, no matter where it appears.
To bridge the old with the new, the typography marries classic and contemporary styles. We’ve selected a serif typeface to echo the heritage and historical value of the halls, balanced by a modern sans-serif that reflects the progressive and creative spirit of the space today. This dual-type approach creates a harmonious balance that speaks to the hall’s storied past while setting the stage for a vibrant future. Together, they form a unique visual language that is both respectful and forward-thinking.
The color palette draws inspiration directly from the Van Gendt Hallen themselves. Subtle, earthy tones reflect the rich materials and textures found within the halls, while brighter colours echo the building’s sturdy, industrial history.
These colors not only ground the brand in its physical space but also evoke a sense of warmth and authenticity. The palette is both timeless and versatile, allowing the identity to feel as dynamic as the events and experiences it hosts.
